Cyrus Meurant Biography

Cyrus Meurant is a graduate of the Conservatorium of Music University of Sydney, where he won both the Frank Albert Prize for Music (2002) and also the Sarah Theresa Makinson Prize for Composition (2003). His teachers have included Anne Boyd, Ross Edwards, Brett Dean, Martin Bresnick, Matthew Hindson, and Richard Meale. A Churchill Fellowship (2006-7) enabled Cyrus to attend studies with Frédéric Durieux (Conservatoire de Paris), Martijn Padding (Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag) and Simon Bainbridge (Royal Academy of Music, London). He has completed works for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Ballet, The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Orchestra Victoria, Sydney Symphony Fellows, Sonic Art Ensemble, the Darwin International Guitar Festival, Australian Youth Orchestra and Symphony Australia Composition Programs.

Cyrus’s music has been set to new choreography at the Theatre Basel, Switzerland, The Place, London, The Sydney Theatre and the Civic Theatre by choreographers including Brett Morgan, Timothy Farrar, Corey Baker and Rosslyn Wythes. Other recent works include Triptych, performed by the New York based Ensemble Signal as well as The Spartans and KLASH, premiered by the National College of Dance in 2012 with choreography by Brett Morgan. A new work Eventide Visions, composed for The Omega Ensemble was performed at the Utzon Room, Sydney Opera House in 2013.

Cyrus continues to perform solo recitals of his own compositions for violin and keyboards at venues including The Stone Gallery, Sydney, The Wollongong City Gallery and The Playhouse, Newcastle.
